If you’re wondering about the latest medical research for psoriasis, you’re in the right place. In this article, we simplify the most important updates from recent studies so you can stay informed. Whether you’re living with psoriasis or a healthcare provider treating patients, we’ve broken down the latest findings into two sections:• Research insights that improve our understanding of psoriasis. • Drug and treatment advances that show promise for managing the condition. It was a great period for psoriasis research, with a lot of exciting news. Drug costs could be going down, several unique treatments are making waves, and many new options are approved or close to approval.

Two Studies on Ilumetri

Ilumetri (Ilumya) is an injection medication that was first approved in May 2018 for treating plaque psoriasis. July 2, 2024, results from the POSITIVE study were released showing promising long-term benefits. Among 782 adults, 60% achieved clear or almost clear skin after 52 weeks, with significant improvements in sensitive areas like the scalp, nails, and palms. This is a significant achievement in efficacy as most treatments achieve far lower levels of complete skin clearance.

Additionally, the study highlighted a notable improvement in overall well-being by Week 16, confirming that Ilumetri can be effective both physically and psychologically for patients.

In another recent report published in Frontiers in Pharmacology, researchers analyzed Ilumetri using data from the FDA’s adverse event (side-effects) reporting system. Now that the drug has been on the market for 6 years researchers wanted to better understand what the side-effect experience was like.

The report mentions statistically notable connections between Ilumya and infections, like herpes simplex and vulvovaginal candidiasis, which hadn’t been emphasized in previous clinical trials. There were also connections to cardiac issues like atrial fibrillation and aortic valve incompetence.

As is often the case researchers noted that while they found statistical connections to these side-effects a closer look is needed.

Tremfya found to require less dosing than expected.

A Phase IIIb Clinical Trial of Tremfya (guselkumab) has found that extending the dose interval from 8 weeks to 16 weeks had very little effect on patient results. The current regimen is to receive one dose every 8 weeks, but the new study shows it can be expanded to once every 16 weeks without any large difference. This is great because it will reduce costs and require less injections for patients. The efficacy and safety of probiotics in the adjuvant treatment of psoriasis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

A review into probiotic treatment of psoriasis

A study exploring the potential of probiotics to reduce skin inflammation and improve symptoms found that they might help. While the results may not be groundbreaking, every small step in understanding is valuable.

Probiotics could play a complementary role in managing psoriasis by restoring the balance of gut bacteria—an important factor in overall health—and reducing inflammation. However, more research is needed to confirm their effectiveness. If proven, probiotics could become a useful addition to psoriasis management in the future.

That’s all for developments from the third quarter of 2024.
With continued research and innovation, we can anticipate more breakthroughs in this area, offering increased hope for a better quality of life for psoriasis patients.
