Hives or wheals (Urticaria), are a temporary swelling of the skin that appears bright or pale pink and is often accompanied by an itching sensation. Hives usually flare-up suddenly and typically come and go within 24 hours.  Typically hives are more commonly seen in women, and some causes may include but are not limited to:
-Allergy
-Autoimmunity
-Medication (drugs)
-Foods
-Infection
Hives are a challenging condition for both the patient and the physician. Treatment by a dermatologist is recommended and may include blood work and/or biopsy of the skin.  In some cases an allergist may be consulted as well to perform skin tests and dietary investigations.
