What to expect in a clinical trial

A clinical trial is a carefully designed medical study that tests how safe and effective a new treatment may be. Volunteers join to help researchers learn more, often under the close supervision of medical professionals.

When you join a trial, you may attend scheduled visits, take the study medication as directed, and undergo health checks. Every step is explained to you in advance, and your safety is closely monitored throughout the process.

Screening

Screening is one appointment before the trial begins.

It helps confirm you’re a good fit, and gives you a chance to learn about potential benefits and risks.

You’ll be able to ask any questions, and if you choose to continue, you’ll be asked to sign an informed consent form.

Participation is completely voluntary—you can leave the trial at any time, for any reason.

Treatment

The treatment period is the main part of the trial, when you’ll receive either the study drug or a placebo.

Some trials allow participants to switch to the active drug after a set period.

You’ll be asked to attend periodic clinic visits, and take part in routine tests, like blood or urine samples, and share how you’re feeling, including any side effects or changes you notice.

Follow-up

The follow-up stage happens near the end of the trial.

You’ll stop using the study drug and attend a few final appointments.

This helps doctors understand how long the benefits last and watch for any effects after stopping.

Some trials also offer long-term extensions, giving you the option to keep using the study drug.

Dr. Alam is a board-certified dermatologist specializing in prurigo nodularis and other chronic and acute skin conditions.

Since 2006 she has conducted over a hundred clinical trials to investigate better treatment options, and has written numerous publications in well known dermatology journals. She has also given poster presentations at annual dermatology conferences in Paris and Geneva.

She is a dedicated and hard-working dermatologist known for her efficient and accurate care of her patients.
