What is medical dermatology versus cosmetic dermatology?
Maybe you’re searching for a dermatologist and you’ve come across some different terms attached to the word dermatology. At our clinic we focus on medical and surgical dermatology, and we leave the cosmetic dermatology to other doctors. So what are these different types of skin care doctors and what do they do for you?
Read on to find out.
Medical Dermatology
Medical dermatologists diagnose and treat the health of your skin, hair, and nails. Whether it’s dry skin, acne, or something more serious like eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer, or alopecia, a medical dermatologist is extremely well trained. As part of their role in skincare, medical dermatologists often interact with auto-immune diseases. Their career normally takes at least 13 years to become a board certified dermatologist.
Our skin reveals more about our health than you might know. Many different health conditions reveal themselves to the trained eye of a skin doctor. Because of this, dermatologists often work with other kinds of doctors to keep their patients healthy.
Surgical Dermatology
Surgical dermatologists treat skin conditions by removing skin cancer, moles, and cysts. They also take skin samples (biopsies) to help with diagnoses.
Mohs surgery is a very common cancer removal technique done by dermatological surgeons that saves healthy skin. Surgeons keep patients safe: treating skin conditions effectively and reducing unnecessary scarring from their work.
Cosmetic Dermatology
Cosmetic dermatologists work on the beauty of your hair, skin, and nails.
Cosmetic dermatologists help patients achieve smoother, more youthful-looking skin through non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments. Cosmetic dermatology focuses on improving appearance through treatments that smooth skin and help with signs of aging, making it a popular field.

You mention Mohs surgery. Does your surgery have Mohs surgery? If you have a history of skin cancer is freezing moles covered by Ohip?
Thanks in advance for advice
Hi Dorothy sorry about the long wait – we hadn’t received any comments in so long! So! Regarding Moh’s surgery, we can’t do it. It is a very expensive procedure and requires a lot of equipment, only one hospital in Toronto is able to do it. And to answer your next question, if a mole is malignant then any treatment will be covered by OHIP. Thank you for your questions!
I have this mole on my back that seems rough to the touch – need to have it checked out to make sure it is not cancerous – my doctor doesn’t seem to be too concerned – seems to think it’s just a aging thing, however, I am very concerned as, in my opinion it seems to be getting bigger
Hi K. kapoor. If you need to have a mole checked out just ask for your doctor for a referral and call us to schedule an appointment. We would be happy to help! – Adam, Media Specialist at SimcoDerm
